I feel more confident to deal with situations in the future and have a greater knowledge of what the law is. I am very concerned about staff in other areas. I feel that as a trust we have been to soft in providing care for patients who propose a threat to staff and other patients. There needs to be more training and support provided for these incidents. We have a duty of care for patients and staff.”

“Useful scenarios to take into practice. Will give more junior staff confidence when dealing with violent & aggressive patients. With rising incidents & a changing patient population I feel that we need greater security presence, particularly at SRH so that staff time can be better utilised caring for patients. A lot of time is consumed with dealing with these types of patients, & this is becoming more frequent.”

“Attended the breakaway training. Great course that should be offered to all staff now and at induction, could be mandatory training. Security staff and their manager James Charlton should also attend. I learned a lot about how to defend myself and I come across aggressive patients/relatives frequently in my job role. I will recommend this course to others. I do think CCTV needs improved at South Tyneside hospital and to also cover all of the carpark through the day and overnight for staff and patient safety.”

The only downside was that the admin for the course was a bit shaky with the admin girl not turning in on time to let us in, which I have to say is no reflection on James as the instructor.”
